A fight at school sends Daje Shelton, 17, to a court-supervised alternative high school. She wants to turn things around and make a better future for herself in her rough St. Louis neighborhood, so she goes to the school with the help of the judge. That's hard because she loses a lot of friends to gun violence, falls in love for the first time, and gets pregnant with a boy named Ahkeem, all while Ferguson is going on a few miles away. Using Daje's own coming-of-age story, "For Ahkeem" shows the challenges that many Black teenagers in the United States face today, as well as the strength and resilience it takes to get through them.
