John Carter is really just a war-weary, former military captain who's inexplicably transported to the mysterious and mysterious planet of Barsoom (Mars) and reluctantly becomes embroiled in an epic battle. It's really a world on the verge of meltdown, and Carter rediscovers his humanity if he realizes the survival of Barsoom and its own people rests on his hands.
