Inocencio Prieto y Calvo receives a letter informing him that he is the heir to his uncle's two million peso fortune. He has no idea who sent the letter or what it says because he cannot read. So he goes to the pharmacy so that the pharmacist can read the letter to him. However, while waiting for assistance, he notices that a young girl can read. He reasons that he must be able to discover the letter's content on his own and decides to save the letter, go to school, and wait to read the letter on his own.
