To lose yet not be defeated Is a victory. This is the guiding principle by which Alek, Sophy, and Rudy navigate their lives. In September1939, Scouts and high school graduates in Warsaw saw their aspirational dreams for the future shattered. They are entering maturity in tumultuous times, which forces them to make a choice: to survive at all costs, or to join the struggle for a free nation, putting everything at danger. They opt to fight because they were raised in patriotic households and influenced by scouting principles. They are able to live a complete life despite their close brushes with death as soldiers.
