The Ref

Caroline and Lloyd are a couple always at each other's throats, masters at crafting barbs at the other's expense. They are so enthusiastic about belittling one another that they never stop -- maybe not even at gunpoint. The gunman is Gus, a thief on the run by law enforcement, that kidnaps the bunch as an insurance policy, intending to make use of their home as a hideout. But their incessant bickering proves a lot more than Gus compelling him -- into the unenviable role of peacemaker -- with regard to his or her own sanity. To make matters worse for Gus, he finds that he has taken the pair hostage the night in their big Christmas party, and the guests are on the way. Perhaps not wanting to leave Caroline and Lloyd unattended, Gus opts to attend the party, pretending to become the couple's marriage adviser. This naturally contributes to a collection of comic confusions, since anxieties head and the hostage crisis towards their inevitable conclusion.
