The Umbrellas of Cherbourg

This romantic tragedy begins in 1957. A French car mechanic, guy Foucher, has fallen inlove with 17-year-old Geneviève Emery, an employee in her mother's chic but embattled umbrella shop. On the day before Guy is to leave in Algeria, Geneviève and he create love. She becomes pregnant and has to choose between waiting for the return of Guy or accepting an offer of marriage from the wealthy diamond merchant.
